LA Firefighter: Staying Alive Inside After Years of Trauma with

Jonathan Vargas

Uncover how first responders can retrain their nervous system to process intensity without shutting down.

First responders arrive at scenes filled with enormous emotional intensity — fear, grief, panic, chaos.

Their training teaches them to remain neutral and focused while everyone else is overwhelmed. But after the call ends, the system must recalibrate. Without tools to return to balance, that stored voltage turns into numbness, addiction, or emotional shutdown. Over time, firefighter Jonathan Vargas began practicing different approaches. Instead of suppressing the feeling — he learned to stay present with it. He recalled a call where a woman was struck by a car and killed in the street. Her family was screaming around the scene while emergency crews worked. In the past, he would have shut down emotionally and treated it as “just another call.” This time, he allowed himself to feel the grief that filled the space. Not collapsing into it. But acknowledging it. Remaining grounded while still being human. That moment changed how he understood resilience. Real strength was presence.

“When we listen deeply—to our bodies and to sound—we create the space for true transformation.”
