From explaining the molecular science of weight loss to exploring the connection between lung function, metabolism, and freediving, his work bridges curiosity, health, and education in ways that empower both children and adults to understand their bodies and the world around them.

What is a carbohydrate? What’s the difference between a vitamin and a mineral? Listen to this to learn.

Reuben Meerman is one of the clearest scientific educators I’ve ever encountered, his work cuts through one of the biggest areas of confusion in modern health: metabolism. Reuben is a physicist and science communicator known for explaining a simple but overlooked fact about weight loss — the mass we lose actually leaves the body through the breath as carbon dioxide. It’s a detail that somehow never made its way into everyday health education. We cover atoms, chemistry, and respiration and how they relate to nutrition. Reuben explains how food is ultimately transformed into carbon dioxide and water, why movement changes how much CO₂ the body produces, and why understanding metabolism at the molecular level can simplify many of the myths around dieting and weight loss. We also talk about the importance of scientific humility — the discipline of staying in your lane while remaining curious about what we still don’t understand. This episode is really about restoring clarity to the metabolic conversation and remembering that even the most complex biology begins with simple atoms moving through the body.

We discussed:

I spend a lot of time with my nose in books. But my favorite place to be is outside: tending to my bees, planting native trees, worm farming, experimenting with electroculture, saving dragonflies, composting, dancing, playing, being.

I sincerely hope your list is at least as long as mine.
